This story often comes to mind when life’s storms threaten to “sink my boat”.

I am drawn to Jesus’ word to the storm here:  “silence!”  In Mark’s rendering of this story, he uses the words “peace, be still” (Mark 4:39).  What powerful words.  What beautiful words.  Words that calmed the literal storm in this story.  Words that invite me to weather my own life’s storms when I remember that Jesus is in the boat with me.

What if these words are more about my own interaction with life’s storms than the calming of the storms themselves?  Silence.  Peace, be still.  What comes of sinking into words like that?  Psalm 46:10 comes to mind:  “Be still and know that I am God”.

Jesus, may your presence in my boat be enough.
