Dr. Karen Froman – Indigenous Resistance & Resilience – October 4th
Steps Toward Reconciliation is honoured to share with you details of an upcoming event with Dr. Karen Froman, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Winnipeg!
Dr. Froman is joining us on October 4 @ 10:00 AM at the Community Exchange in Altona to speak about the history of the Indian Residential School System in Canada and to share stories of Indigenous resistance and resilience.
Dr. Froman is of mixed Kanyen’keha:ka (Mohawk) and Irish/English/Dutch ancestry, and a registered member of Six Nations of the Grand River Territory (Ontario). She was born and raised in Winnipeg. Her father and his siblings were survivors of the Mohawk Institute and struggled to pass on language and culture to her. She is a single mom of two adult children and comes from a “non-traditional” educational journey as she was a high school drop-out and entered University as a mature student. Her research interests include urban Indigenous histories, labour, cultural identity in an urban context, and education. Her PhD dissertation focussed on imagery and representations of Indigenous peoples via the National Film Board in the mid-twentieth century.
This is a free event. All are welcome!
