ALTONA’S FREE COMMUNITY MEAL BEGINS MARCH 28 – On March 28, a group of volunteers from Altona Bergthaler Mennonite Church (ABC) will host Altona’s first free Community Meal. Community Meal will be a monthly event on the last Saturday of the month (except for June when Community Meal will be June 20) between 5-6:30pm at Altona Senior Centre.

The model and inspiration for this initiative is Café 545, Winkler’s weekly free community meal. Says pastor Mark Tiessen-Dyck, “When I experienced Café 545 and saw the impact it has had in Winkler, I thought it would be amazing to see this happen in Altona.” The Rhineland Area Ministerial and the people of ABC have been strong supporters of making Community Meal a reality. ABC will provide initial funding and volunteers for Community Meal. Altona Mennonite Church and Seeds Church are also on board in helping to grow Community Meal. Susianty Braun, formerly owner of Jasemine Tea Room, will be the primary cook and menu planner.

Everyone is invited to Community Meal. “Our hope is that this is a place where everyone feels welcome. Whether you need a free meal, would value some company, or just don’t want to cook, this event is for you” says Tiessen-Dyck, “food has the power to build peace and create community and our church really values these things. We want to give to our community and share God’s love.”

While contributions to the cost of the meal will be accepted, this is not expected. This is a free meal and anyone who wishes to come and eat with fellow residents of Altona and surrounding area are welcome. For further information please contact Mark Tiessen-Dyck at 204-324-6717 or [email protected]
