Keeping the Peace? Exploring past and present relationships between peace and policing in Winnipeg
Public Lecture by Dr. Bronwyn Dobchuk-Land who teaches Criminal Justice at the University of Winnipeg. According to mainstream media Winnipeggers are increasingly fearful in their own city. Whether the conversation is about theft, addictions, or violent crimes there is a sense that things have gotten worse. Entangled in the question of peace and violence is the question of policing. What is the historic role of policing and how does that inform its practices and mission today? Who is best served by the police, who is most harmed? For groups, like Mennonites, committed to peacemaking and justice are there present and possible alternatives to policing that better serve those most vulnerable to violence? Wed, March 11 @ 7 pm at First Mennonite Church (922 Notre Dame Ave).
