Luke 16: 1-9

At first I found this passage puzzling. The Master commends his servant for creatively/corruptly finding a way to support himself after he loses his job. Seems odd for Jesus to be using this as a parable. Then later Jesus says:

“Streetwise people are smarter in this regard than law-abiding citizens. They are on constant alert, looking for angles, surviving by their wits. I want you to be smart in the same way—but for what is right—using every adversity to stimulate you to creative survival, to concentrate your attention on the bare essentials, so you’ll live, really live, and not complacently just get by on good behaviour.”

Jesus, your calling me to be alert, to watch what’s going on around me, to see where you are at work and join you. This is especially true in times of difficulty when it is so easy to fall into a self-centred survival mode. There are opportunities to live for and impact your kingdom every day, in every circumstance. Dear Jesus, give me an eternal perspective, help me see above the clouds of day to day adversity and “live, really live”!

Amen
